When Covid-19 hit Kensington, residents, businesses and community organizers reached out to their neighbors, raised funds, and worked long hours lifting heavy boxes to make sure that no one would go hungry. Throughout the pandemic, Anna and Jordan Rathkopf photographed and interviewed these diverse networks of people who devoted their time, energy, and hearts to mutual aid in their community.
Kensington Cares honors these community members who led mutual aid efforts in Kensington, Brooklyn. We created this multi-lingual public art exhibition at the Ave C Plaza with the Rathkopfs, Photoville, and ArtBuilt. Community groups highlighted included Kensington / Windsor Terrace Mutual Aid, People in Need, Pakistani American Youth Society, and Thai Farm Kitchen. Programming around the exhibit included a community celebration honoring the groups featured in the photographs and a neighborhood food tour. The exhibit was included in Photoville's fall festival and featured at our October concert on the plaza.
